Glue together four shiny Christmas ornaments in a tetrahedron, one silver, one golden, one red, and one blue. (I broke the green one, so I used blue instead.) Place on top of a light bulb. If you look in the middle of the thing, you’ll see a fractal pattern, which I have seen described as an Apollonian fractal or a Sierpinski Gasket.
Note that the outer triangle is outlined in blue.
I originally remember reading this described in Physics Today magazine ten or fifteen years ago, but I can’t seem to dredge the article up again. These photos are repeats of some I did two years ago. I may repeat it in the future using green ornaments, and will use more expensive ones that have smoother, more blemish-free surfaces. I think the fractal aspect of the image will be even more apparent.
